| All sales tax exemptions should be permitted to expire(Sunset Provision). No more "Christmas Tree Ornaments" on unrelated legislation. The gas tax has not been increased, I believe since 1987. Using the Rule of 72 that means that the inflation adjusted revenue dollars in 2016 dollars are about 45 cents. Once we fact0or in better fuel economy for today's cars we can reasonably conclude we are spending between 25 and 30 cents/1987 dollar. No wonder our roads,bridges and storm drains are a mess. Spend dollars more wisely. If you are happy with your taxes don't vote for me! | |||
| I support criminal justice reform. We cannot lock folks up for decades and expect them to emerge from prison as productive citizens. We cannot spend more on prisons than schools. Criminal justice is both a deterrent and a matter of public safety. We must find the balance between the two and ask our wardens to identify those inmates they believe to be of no threat to society and let them go. Save the huge cost of incarceration and transfer to vocational and technical education. We should also decriminalize some offenses and/or greatly reduce the sentencing guidelines. | |||
| Property Taxes: Act 388 is not working, especially in coastal communities. We need to address this failing system for school funding and the general fund. Sales Taxes: We must "sunset" the myriad sales tax exemptions and require that they stand on their merits. Revenue would increase dramatically with no increase in sales taxes. The gas tax should be adjusted for inflation from 1987 to the present( 3% annually). | |||

| Government spending to promote job growth is very risky. Between 2010 and 2015 70% of the jobs created were in 50 of the country's 1,371 counties. Much of politicians spending for job creation is either a huge waste of taxpayer's money or very ineffective. Re: Lowering taxes to promote economic growth. S.C. must be competitive with other states. Raising taxes can slow growth and discourage investment. Minimum Wage: we are fortunate that other states have already gone the $15 route. We will soon know many jobs if any, are lost and how federal benefits are adjusted to reflect higher wages. | |||
